Description

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Vinyl LP. Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the ''70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after a decade, and its longevity makes sense. That 1973 concept album distilled the wild psychedelic of their early years -- that brief, heady period when they were fronted by Syd Barrett-- into a slow, sculpted, widescreen epic masterminded by Roger Waters, the bassist who was the band''s de facto leader in the ''70s.Waters fueled the band''s golden years, conceiving such epics as Wish You Were Here and The Wall, but the band survived his departure in the ''80s, with guitarist David Gilmour stepping to forefront on A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. Throughout the years, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Rick Wright appeared in some capacity, and the band''s sonic signature was always evident: a wide, expansive sound that was instantly recognizable as their own yet was adopted by all manner of bands, from guitar-worshipping metal-heads to freaky, hippie, ambient electronic duos. Unlike almost any of their peers, Pink Floyd played to both sides of the aisle: they were rooted in the blues but their heart belonged to the future, a dichotomy that made them a quintessentially modern 20th century band. That blues influence, quickly sublimated and only surfacing on the occasional Gilmour guitar solo, was the foundation for the band''s very name, as the group decided to splice the names of two old bluesmen --Pink Anderson and Floyd Council-- as a tribute to the American mus...

Just as good as 1975, if not a bit better

I''ve had my dad''s 1975 pressing on loan, for a few months now. This re-master was done by the same people as my "Dark Side" re-master. This is just spot on! Things sound right. Maybe a bit more refined than 1975, but so good. I was a bit saddened when I ordered it, as it did not appear to have the original jacket. The actual jacket was behind not one, but two plastic envelopes! So I have something that sounds just as good as the 1975 release, and looks the same (although the labels on the actual vinyl are purple instead of light blue). Oh, and there''s a postcard inside!

Listening on an Audio-Technica LP90 turntable and Edifier R1700BT speakers.

In my eyes, Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall tend to garner the most attention and devotion in terms of Pink Floyd''s discography. Wish You Were Here, however, is my personal favorite. The aforementioned LPs have some extremely choice cuts (Breathe, Us and Them, Great Gig in the Sky, Hey You, Another Brick in the Wall, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, need I say more?), but the thematic aspects of those immortalized records work against my overall listening pleasure due to mid-point adjoining tracks and fillers. The Wall in particular suffers on side 4 as the theme descends into theatrics... as if Andrew Lloyd Webber had written a musical set in an insane asylum. Wish You Were Here contains no such flaws. There is not one less-than-stellar track to be found. Besides the sublime title track, Have a Cigar and Shine On You Crazy Diamond (both tracks) are enduring classics that don''t grow old or wear out. The gem for me just may be Welcome to the Machine... an extraordinary piece if I ever heard one.

My rating is for this particular product, not for the music. I think Wish You Were Here is a phenomenal album, a masterpiece.

This product is ASIN: B019VQSADM, Original Release Date: January 8, 2016. It is described as “2016 Sony Legacy edition.” It currently costs $10.00 at Amazon.

It has inferior sound quality when compared to this other product: ASIN: B004ZN9T00, Release Date September 27, 2011, which is described as “Discovery version - the original studio album, digitally remastered by James Guthrie.” This latter product currently costs $13.20 at Amazon, which is worth the extra money, in my opinion.

This version stands by itself and, for me anyway, doesn''t require "extras". I believe this re-mastering is the best I''ve heard and listening to it know I''ve made the right decision for me. This is my personal favorite Floyd album, which I know is controversial given Dark Side''s popularity! But this was a brilliantly conceived and executed theme that chills and excites me all at the same time. True Floyd, true essence of who they are/were...

So Gilmour''s just bought a 12-string, and is fooling with the title song''s first lick, when Waters asks him if the lick is his. (Seems like Pink Floyd sponged good ideas pretty well as well as launched many of their own) The title song is full of missed opportunities, and wishing for (re)connection, and is rightfully one of the most recognizable songs in the Floyd repertoire. I''m particularly enamored of a YouTube video of some Irish buskers in the Dublin train station who start the song, and have more than a hundred people stopping to join in. It''s that much a bridge between people of all sorts.

A quintessential Pink Floyd Album, reflecting on corporate shenanigans (Have a Cigar, Welcome to the Machine), and the loss of Syd Barrett, who stopped by to visit during recording, heard "Shine On," but didn''t get that it was about him. The band never saw him again, and his loss to the abyss of his insanity is forever memorialized by this album.

First of all, this is a review of the album, so I''m not going to take away stars due to my opinion on the packaging.
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd is one of the best Prog albums of all time. Probably my favorite Pink Floyd album as well. The remaster on this CD sounds fantastic. Each song on the album is really good. If you''re into prog, this is a must have album. There''s nothing wrong with it except for the packaging in this release. The disc comes in a record-style folding cardboard sleeve thing. One side holds the disc and the other holds the booklet. The design and art is really good, but it just isn''t good packaging. Cardboard is easy to tear and doesn''t last as long as a plastic jewel case would. All the newer Pink Floyd rereleases have this cardboard packaging. It wasn''t a super difficult fix or anything, I just transferred the disc and the booklet to a spare jewel case I had, but still. I can buy an older release of the album for 5 dollars and get better packaging. It''s a little ridiculous that this release cost 11 dollars and came in cardboard. But other than that, fantastic album.

In case you''re somehow unfamiliar with the music: This is a perfect, Waters helmed (best era imo), Floyd album.

As for the product:
2016 vinyl remastered from the original analog tapes, by James Gruthie, Joel Plante, and Bernie Grundman. The package is a beautiful reproduction** and, more importantly, the sound (I previously only owned it on cd) is far richer than I''ve ever heard it. The record has great detail and clarity without being at all sterile.
I would give it 4.8 right now due to three or four brief, and not too loud, instances of surface noise. I may eliminate them with a secondary cleaning.
Also not deducting points for
** it arriving with a bad corner ding from Amazon. Sometimes they pack well, sometimes not.

I got this remastered CD album to update in my CD collection. Wish You Were Here is one of Pink Floyd''s most soulful albums, maybe second to Dark Side of the Moon. It has a short list of songs, but all of the songs are gems. Wish You Were Here was the band''s dedication to Sid Barret, but it can apply to anyone in our lives. Especially those who we miss for some reason or another. Listening to any Pink Floyd record is for me a spiritual and cosmic experience. That is how deep their music is. I highly recommend this album.

Exquisite guitar work, and a eye (or, more accurately. ear) for atmosphere, this has to be one of their best, from the poignant and powerful title track to the phenomenal sax solo on ''Diamond'' there are scattered treeasures thorughout. This is one of the few releases where the pressings couldn''t keep up with the demand - and I can understand why. Lyrically biting, musically melodic and definitely - but not regretfully, reflective - it''s one of those album that will wear out before I get tired of it.
