The perfect storm of a Christy Moore musical experience

I consider Christy''s 1994 release "Live at the Point" to be one of the most perfect live albums ever produced. It makes every "Desert Island Disc" list I''ve made since I first listened to it on my first trip to Ireland in 1996.

It is Christy at his finest, playing and singing unaccompanied. Just a man, his guitar, a bodhran, and a black t-shirt sopping up significant quantities of perspiration.

His new release "On the Road", a live two-disc set recorded over the last three years worth of gigs, has just raised the bar even higher.

Take the immeasurable awesomeness of "Live at the Point", mix in some of the banter and ad-libbed lyrics from 2002''s "Live at Vicar Street" (killer version of "Lisdoonvarna"), stretch it out to the two-disc length of "Live in Dublin 2006", throw in some additional musicians to expand the instrumental depth of it all, and you have the perfect storm of a Christy Moore musical experience.

Where "Live in Dublin 2006" packed in 35 tracks, "On the Road" has but 24, but every track is a winner. Personal favorites include "The Voyage" (our wedding song), "Lingo Politico" (sometimes subtitled "I Hate Politicians"), and "Weekend in Amsterdam". Other classic tracks, such as "City of Chicago", "Joxer Goes to Stuttgart", "Nancy Spain", "Cliffs of Dooneen", and the Pogues'' "Fairytale of New York" will delight Christy fans both long-time and new.

MOORE, Christy. On the Road. 2 CDs. SONY. 2017.
CM, voc, guit; Declan Sinott, guit, voc; Jim Higgins, perc, voc; Mairtin O’Connor, accord; Cathal Hayden, fiddle, bjo; Seamie O’Dowd, guit, mand, harm, voc; Andy Moore, Vickie Keating, voc.
If you want to hear what a balladeer is, listen to Christie Moore. He’s been performing now for forty-nine years now, either on his own or in groups like Planxty, with no loss of power or conviction. Culled from recent live concerts, it shows his mastery of the art of performing. Audience noise is often an irritant in albums like this but not here because a large part of Moore’s power is that he connects: thee audience, whipped up by their enthusiasm, become an adjunct to the show. Listen here to the very first tune, “Ordinary Man,” about a man, a faithful factory worker for twenty years, who’s now without job, money and dignity, while the bosses still drive around in their posh cars. The story is so simple, so true, and Moore sings it with fervor but no embellishment, and the audience eats it up. They clap behind him, sing some of the refrain, and the excitement builds, builds, builds. And then the album moves on to another version of Moore’s signature love ballad, “Ride On,” which is one of the loveliest songs –floating in a gray area between pop ballad and folk ballad—that I have ever heard: a man’s lover riding away on the back of a great (white?) horse, the singer mourning his loss: “Ride on, See you, / I could never go with you / No matter how I wanted to.”” There are other favorites of mine on the first disc, “Black Is the Colour” (sung with a variant melody), “Lisdoonvarna,” “Viva la Quinta Brigada” (Spanish Civil War song), one song on the second disc, “McIlhatton.” Listen to Cathal Hayden’s fiddle solo on this song, picked up in an accordion-fiddle duet in jig time (Hayden with Mairtin O’Connor). Moore is a master of the talked, not sung, monologue, almost stream of consciousness, mixing places and peoples in reminiscence: young men going to Germany in the early ‘70s for a soccer match (they won! “Joxer Goes to Stuttgart”), an absolutely hilarious and outright bawdy reminiscence about a “Weekend in Amsterdam.” There’s social protest lightly presented but deeply felt, you are certain, in “Don’t Forget Your Shovel”: “We want to go to heaven / But we’re always diggin’ holes.” And outright scorn of politicians’ excuses for not doing anything in “Lingo Politico.” Light self-mocking in “If I Get an Encore.”

In a Christie Moore album you get great music, wonderful storytelling and a large dose of humor, of the kind you can find, I suppose, in many an Irish pub, people sitting around and telling stories, each one trying to top the story that was told right before.

In my opinion, Christie is one of the best live performers ever and Declan Sinnott is just the perfect accompanist, what a great musician he is. Christie has such a great connection with his audience who just love him and seemingly know the words to all his songs. It''s a double CD here with a mix of comical songs and rousing ballads. Anyone familiar with Christie will know all the songs but that does not matter as there is a great party atmosphere and everyone has a good time. A marvellous set of songs and if I had to pick out one song it would be Ride On especially for Declan''s superb haunting guitar. Buy it even if you already have all the songs.
